Janitorial Express has long championed sustainability and environmental stewardship within the cleaning industry. My personal admiration for the work done by the Ellen Mcarther Foundation and my commitment to a circular economy has been well documented. With this in mind I would like to draw your attention to the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2024 starting on the 15th April, the F2F version is this year is being held in Brussels.
There are a large number of workshops in the programme some I believe could be of interest to those in the Contract Cleaning and Facilities Management industries. However, none of these I find particularly compelling or relevant to people in our industry. I think that's a shame bearing in mind the size of the industry in the UK, (£59 billion p.a. according to the BCC). I think they are missing a trick as this has the potential to positively impact world carbon reduction.
Clearly, I have too much time on my hands these days as I found myself trying to imagine what subjects for seminars and discussion groups would be particularly relevant to our industry and that I and many of my colleagues in cleaning would find useful.
Here are a few I have come up with:
"Circular Solutions for Sustainable Cleaning Practices." This session delves into innovative approaches to designing cleaning products and reducing waste in the industry. I believe that embracing circular strategies in cleaning operations can not only minimise environmental impact but also drive efficiency and cost savings for businesses. Developing and using environmentally positive cleaning products aligns perfectly with majority of businesses in the UK cleaning industry.
Another workshop would be "Circular Procurement in Facilities Management." This session focuses on the importance of sourcing sustainable products and services in facility management operations. I think we all recognise the significance of circular procurement in reducing resource consumption and promoting a circular economy. Discussions could be had on how we actively collaborate with clients to integrate circular principles into their procurement processes, ensuring that they have access to eco-friendly cleaning solutions that align with their sustainability goals.
"Engaging Communities for Circular Initiatives" is another workshop that resonates with my vision for sustainability. This session explores strategies for fostering community engagement and collaboration in circular economy initiatives. I believe in the power of partnerships in particular with local authorities, charities, and educational institutions to promote sustainable practices across communities. As such debates on the benefits of supporting such initiatives and driving positive change at the grassroots level, would be helpful.
Other workshops such as "Circular Education: Teaching Sustainability in Schools" and "Circular Economy and ESG Reporting" further highlight the diverse facets of the circular economy and its impact on various sectors. By actively participating in workshops of this nature, I think we can all prove our dedication to advancing sustainability, promoting circularity, and driving meaningful change within the cleaning industry and beyond.
Hopefully the Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) may next year widen its appeal somewhat and engage with the cleaning industry we have a lot of really committed people who could bring a lot to the table.
